How Long a Layover Do You Need to Leave Dubai Airport?

Here is the short answer. Under 6 hours, stay in the airport. At 6 to 8 hours, you can make one short trip if everything goes well. From 9 hours, you have time for a proper tour of the city. Those numbers assume you can enter the UAE and your flights land on time. Below, we show how to work out your own layover and what can quietly take away your time.

What you can do with each layover length

Count your layover from the time you land to the time your next flight departs, not to boarding time.

  • Under 6 hours: stay at the airport. The time left is too short to be worth the risk.
  • 6 to 8 hours: one nearby stop, usually Downtown Dubai. Only go with hand luggage and a same-terminal connection.
  • 9 hours: a 5-hour tour of Old and New Dubai fits, with little to spare.
  • 10 to 12 hours: a full tour with a safe buffer, and time for a meal or one paid attraction.
  • 12 to 24 hours: think about a hotel, a longer city tour or an evening activity.
  • 24 hours or more: you have time for a desert safari or a trip to Abu Dhabi.

How to work out your own layover

Start at your departure time and work backwards. This shows you how much city time you really have.

Take your layover and subtract 1 hour to clear the airport. Subtract 3 hours for being back at DXB before departure. Whatever is left is your time outside the airport, including travel.

With a 9-hour layover, that leaves 5 hours. With a 6-hour layover, it leaves 2 hours, and much of that is spent in traffic. That is why our 5-hour tour needs a layover of at least 9 hours, even when a shorter one looks close on paper.

Six things that use up your layover

Add time for anything on this list that applies to you.

  • Changing terminals: allow an extra 30 to 45 minutes if you arrive and depart from different terminals
  • Checked bags: if your bags are not tagged through, you have to collect them and check them in again
  • Separate tickets: you may need to collect bags and check in again, and the second airline may not wait if your first flight is late
  • A late first flight: check the arrival record for your flight, and leave extra room if it is often late
  • Long immigration queues: these vary by time of day and by passport
  • Rush hour: leave more time if you are returning during the evening rush

First check: can you enter the UAE?

Your time does not matter if you cannot leave the airport. Leaving DXB means entering the UAE, so you need visa-free entry, a visa on arrival or a visa issued before you travel.

If your passport needs a visa, the UAE has 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas. The government lists the 48-hour visa as free and the 96-hour visa as AED 50, but airlines can add their own charges. Apply well before you travel, and do not expect to arrange one on arrival. Your onward flight must be confirmed, and rules can vary by airline. See our Dubai transit visa guide for details, then confirm with your airline.

Why 3 hours back at the airport?

Three hours can feel like too much when you could be out seeing the city. Here is why we plan around it. On the way back you need to get through check-in if you need it, security and passport control, and then get to your gate. Dubai is a very large airport, and gates can be a long way from the entrance.

Check-in and bag drop can also close earlier than people expect. Some airlines close check-in about 60 minutes before departure, and bag drop can close before that. Confirm the exact times for your airline. If traffic delays you by 30 minutes, those 3 hours give you room to absorb it.

Three real-world examples

These examples show how the same layover length can give very different answers.

  • 7 hours, same terminal, hand luggage only: possible, but only for a short Downtown trip
  • 9 hours, one ticket, bags checked through: a good fit for a 5-hour private tour
  • 9 hours, separate tickets, arriving at Terminal 1 and leaving from Terminal 3: too tight for a full tour, so plan a shorter trip or stay at the airport

If you have 9 hours or more

Our Private Dubai Layover Tour was planned around these numbers. It lasts 5 hours, costs from AED 500 per group for up to 6 people, and starts with a meet and greet in DXB arrivals. Pickups run from 7am to 5pm, so your flight needs to land by about 4pm. It is planned to get you back at least 3 hours before your next flight.

Send us your flight numbers after booking so we can track your arrival. If you land late, we adjust the route. Free cancellation is available up to 48 hours before the tour.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum layover to leave Dubai airport?+

We suggest at least 6 hours for a short trip and at least 9 hours for a proper city tour. Under 6 hours, it is safest to stay in the airport.

Can I leave Dubai airport on a 5-hour layover?+

You may be allowed to leave if you can enter the UAE, but we do not recommend it. After clearing the airport and returning early for your flight, you would have about 1 hour left.

Is 8 hours enough to leave Dubai airport?+

Yes, for a short trip to one area such as Downtown Dubai, as long as you have hand luggage and a smooth connection. It is not quite enough for our 5-hour tour, which needs at least 9 hours.

Do I need a visa to leave Dubai airport on a layover?+

You need to be able to enter the UAE. Some passports get visa-free entry or a visa on arrival. Others need a visa before travel, such as a 48-hour or 96-hour transit visa. Check with your airline before you fly.

How early should I get back to Dubai airport?+

Plan to be back at least 3 hours before your flight. Check your airline's check-in and bag drop deadlines too, as some close 60 minutes or more before departure.
