Traditional dhow dinner cruise sailing through Dubai Marina at night

Both cruises use the same kind of boat - a traditional wooden dhow with an open upper deck and a buffet dinner - and both last about two hours. What you see from the deck is completely different. The Marina cruise sails beneath some of the tallest residential towers on earth; the Creek cruise drifts past the souks, wind towers and abras of old Dubai. Here is how to choose, based on what our guests tell us after each one.

Dhow cruise Marina vs Creek: side-by-side

If you only remember one line: choose the Marina for skyline wow-factor and a more polished evening, choose the Creek for heritage atmosphere and the best price in Dubai for a dinner cruise.

  • Price (our rates): Creek from AED 70 per person; Marina from AED 125 per person
  • Views: Creek - Deira and Bur Dubai waterfront, souks, heritage buildings, Dubai Creek Tower area; Marina - Marina towers, JBR, Ain Dubai, the Palm skyline
  • Atmosphere: Creek - calmer, traditional, cultural; Marina - lively, glamorous, busier
  • Boats: Creek dhows tend to be older and more traditional; Marina dhows are often newer with glass-enclosed lower decks
  • Duration: about 2 hours on both
  • Entertainment: Tanoura dance show on both; Marina boats sometimes add live music
  • Best for: Creek - budget travellers, culture lovers, older guests; Marina - first-timers, couples, photographers, groups

Dubai Creek dhow cruise: who it suits

Dubai Creek is where the city began. The cruise departs from the Deira or Bur Dubai side and sails along a waterway lined with old trading dhows, souk rooftops and mosques, past the illuminated Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. It feels authentic rather than polished, and many guests rate the experience as the more memorable of the two precisely because it shows a side of Dubai most visitors skip.

It is also the best-value dinner cruise in the city. At AED 70 including dinner and a show, it costs less than a mid-range restaurant meal in Downtown. The trade-off is that the boats are simpler and the view is lower-rise and less lit up.

Pair it with: an Old Dubai morning (Al Fahidi, abra ride, Gold and Spice Souks) so you see the same area by day and by night.

Dubai Marina dhow cruise: who it suits

The Marina cruise is the one you have seen on Instagram: a wooden dhow sliding between glowing skyscrapers, with the Marina promenade and JBR on either side. The boats are usually more modern, the buffet tends to be larger, and the whole evening has a more upscale feel.

Many Marina routes loop out toward the open water near Ain Dubai and the Bluewaters skyline before turning back - one of the best low-cost ways to see the New Dubai skyline lit up.

Pair it with: a half-day city tour in the afternoon. Our Half-Day City Tour plus Marina Dhow Dinner combo covers both for AED 250.

Food, drinks and dietary needs

Both cruises serve an international buffet with Arabic, Indian and continental dishes, and both include vegetarian options. Water and soft drinks are typically included; alcohol is not served on most standard dhows. If you need Jain, vegan or allergy-specific meals, tell us when you book so we can inform the boat in advance.

Is a dhow cruise in Dubai worth it?

For the price, yes. A dhow cruise is one of the few Dubai experiences that combines dinner, a show and a sightseeing trip in one evening for well under AED 150. It is relaxed rather than thrilling, so set expectations accordingly: you are paying for the setting, not gourmet food.

If you want something more private or premium, consider a shared yacht tour instead. Our Xclusive Shared Yacht Tour in Dubai Marina starts from AED 210 with food, on a smaller and more modern boat.

Our verdict

First trip to Dubai, only time for one cruise: choose the Marina. Second visit, travelling on a budget, or travelling with older parents who prefer a calmer evening: choose the Creek. With time for both, do the Creek early in your trip and the Marina near the end - the contrast tells the story of how Dubai grew.
